Week 7 Updates!

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

Western Reserve, LaTuchie, & Force lead 18+, but Paramount Westlake Moves up in 40+!

Whoa! While the 18+ Flights remain much the same, the 40+ Flight sees a change of leadership while several individual records are broken, added to, or recalibrated, like Captain Robert winning again! Yet falls behind last post's record claiming status. So what gives? Were our numbers wrong? Can the D.F.O. do simple addition? Were we actually fans of Star Wars back in the day and now you're thinking, "Ohhhhhh, okay ... that explains a lot"? SO MANY OF THOSE QUESTIONS, per our therapist, sadly, won't be answered. But for those that will, read on!

Flight 1 Standings

W.Reserve 5-1

CSC 4-2

Mayfield 4-2

CVAC 3-3

Green 2-4

Fairlawn 0-6

Western Reserve @ Green - 3-2

Mayfield v. CVAC - 4-1

CSC @ Fairlawn - 4-1

The closest Flight in all the world (i.e., Northeast Ohio), continued it's family hug-like uncomfortable closeness as Western Reserve travelled to Green to stay atop the Flight 1 standings. In singles, both clubs split, as Reserve's David won his fourth 3.0 victory of the season while tournament tested Brandon enjoyed his first win on the year! In doubles, Green's Mark won his third 3.0 doubles match in a row, this time versus noted Frenchman N.A. De Fault, who, once again, was unable to score nary a point versus the powerful tandem of Mark and Jeff! But Reserve's Captain Chris, despite N.A.'s ONCE AGAIN HORRIFIC PLAY, got his team back on the scoreboard, helping Tony earn his first 3.0 victory for his club! Thus, at 2-2, it was down to #3 doubles, AS IT WAS MEANT TO BE! Ovidiu and Tim got off to a fast start for Reserve, but Captain Rob from Green pushed the second set to the limit, and though they fell, they showed everyone that you can't can't spell "EFFORT" without "GREEN"! Or ... without at least some of the same ... well ... you get the idea...

The "we are running out of twins" references pic...

Up north, Mayfield continued their mid-season surge, enjoying a 4-1 victory versus visiting CVAC. In singles, CVAC's David enjoyed his third 3.0 singles win on the year, but Green's co-captain Phil, perhaps in a power-struggle to show he's the king of all the Kings, went to the near limit to even the team score in a 7-6, 7-6 nail biter! In #1 doubles, Rick and Karl won the day in SUPER TIE-BREAK fashion, all the more remarkable as it was their combined SEVENTH SUPER TIE-BREAK match of the season. WHOA! THE PHYSICAL FORTITUDE! Mayfield Captain R.J., either inspired by Rick and Karl, or trying to show upstart co-captain Phil who was really the king of Kings, then joined with Matthew to - in SUPER TIE-BREAK fashion! - clinch the team match for their squad, not only keeping their team in FLight 1 contention, but also showing all the King's who the biggest King of the King's really is! And his name? KING!

A gratuitous Dustin Fox pic just to see if he visits this website...

CSC, needing a win to stay atop the Flight standings, did just that as the headed to one of the top vacation destinations in all Flight 1 ... Fairlawn! (We're pretty sure this is accurate based on our VRBO rental vacation reviews). CSC's Erick and Jeff got the scoring started on the singles courts as both enjoyed their third and fifth, respectively, wins on the 3.0 year, but Fairlawn veterans Mickey and Tim, both playing in their third SUPER TIE-BREAK match of the the year, showed they had the stamina necessary for the big leagues of 3.0 tennis by not only pulling out their third 3.0 wins on the year, but also getting their team back in the match! CSC co-captain Jacob, though, wasn't about to let his squad squander their lead, and together with rian, threw the 3.0 hammer down as both enjoyed their fourth 3.0 wins on the year, not only winning the team the match, but keeping their team near the top of the Flight 1 standings!

Flight 2 Standings

LaTuchie 7-0

P. Medina 4-2

Wembley 3-3

Mentor 2-4

NCRC 2-5

CRC 1-5

Paramount Medina @ CRC - 4-1

Wembley v. NCRC - 3-2

LaTuchie v. Mentor - 3-2

Captain Phil, taking no 3.0 prisoners!

Paramount Medina continued their charge to the top, with two of the most giant tennis players in the history of 3.0 tennis (we're pretty sure that's accurate; we took a history class in college, so...) got their team off to a fast start as Matt and Bogdan swept the singles courts with their 43' combined height of tennis prowess! Paramount Captain Phil, sensing the time was right to sweep the leg, as tennis sensei John Kreese would advise, teamed with 3.0 veteran Denny to sweep (or seal?) the deal with a tough three set SUPER TIE-BREAK win to keep his beloved Paramount dojo in the running for Flight 2 accolades!

Wembley's 3.0 rookie Rex in action...

Wembley continued their mid-season surge, enjoying a victory at home versus the travelling North Cantonites. Wembley's Larry enjoyed his second singles 3.0 win of the year, this time versus veteran standout Benjamin in an impressive display that inspired teammate David to do the same on his singles court! The Wembley Dream Doubles Team of J.P. and David looked to clinch the match for their club, but NCRC's Matthew and rookie Rex had other ideas, and one such idea was WINNING, with Matthew winning his fourth 3.0 match on the year! No doubt inspired by their teammates' victory, as well as a fiery inspirational speech from Captain Benjamin, veteran Timothy evened the team score with his first 18+ victory on the season! Thus, tied at 2-2, #3 doubles would decide the ultimate winner of the day! Wembley Captain Brandon responded as most would - by putting in undefeated Michael to seal the deal! And as everyone in Flight 2 knows, deal sealing is Michael's speciality, and he deal sealed his way to his fourth 3.0 victory of the year, helping Wembley climb toward the top of the Flight 2 standings!

Speaking of the top of Flight 2 standings, LaTuchie continued their winning ways by ... um ... winning! But not without a 3.0 fight, as visiting Mentor came out strong, sweeping the singles courts as Nicholas and Amgad enjoyed their combined third singles victories on the season! LaTuchie Captain Jeff, though, stopped the bleeding with his fifth 3.0 victory on the season, this one on the #1 while teammate Ronald did the same on doubles courts #2 with his sixth 3.0 victory! Thus, once again, #3 doubles would determine the fate of the team match, and in a close three set SUPER TIE-BREAK, LaTuchie veterans Alan and Timothy both enjoyed their third 3.0 victories on the season for their team, Alan's all the more impressive as it was his third three set 3.0 match on the year! Whoa! Congrats to LaTuchie and especially Alan, the Marathon Man of Flight 2!

Flight 3 Standings

Force 4-0

Towpath 4-1

Bay 3-2

Springside 1-4

P. Westlake 0-5

Bay v. Springside - 3-2

Towpath v. Paramount Westlake - 3-2

In a Flight that is becoming increasingly close, Bay ended their two match slide with a close homecourt victory over travelling Springside as 3.0 rookie Nathan enjoyed his second 3.0 singles win of his career. But fellow 3.0 rookie Earl balanced the scoresheet as he enjoyed his first 3.0 win on the year - and career! - with a hard-fought three set SUPER TIE-BREAK inaugural 3.0 victory! In doubles, Bay free agents Ted and Michael enjoyed their third 3.0 victory as a paired tandem, showing they may be the new doubles poster boys for Bay, but James and Rick evened the score as both enjoyed their first 3.0 victories on the season for Springside! Thus, former Bay captain Erik, with veteran Tom, faced off versus current Springside Captain David who teamed with ... David?! WHOA! Perhaps confused by the Double David's across the court from them, Erik and Tom struggled, losing the first set in a tie-breaker before focusing on just ONE David at a time, thus recovering to bounce back and take the second set, also by tie-breaker. WHOA! Which meant ... SUPER TIE-BREAK for the win! In a back and forth battle that ended 10-6, homecourt won the day, as Erik and Tom held on to win 10-6 in the third to clinch the match for their beloved Bay. Indeed, as the final point was scored, wily veteran Tom could be heard to exclaim, "I AM EXHAUSTED." Indeed!

All of Akron applauded Towpaths efforts!

Meanwhile, many, many, many miles away (thanks* NEO for the Flights being organized this way!), Towpath's Jason got his team on the scoreboard first with his fourth 3.0 victory on the season, but Paramount's Doug evened the scoring with his first 3.0 singles win on the year! Towpath's Captain Frank took charge, and in a back and forth three set SUPER TIE-BREAK extravaganza, Paramount's Peter and John won the day versus the legendary Towpath leader! With momentum slipping, Towpath veteran Bryan stopped the 3.0 bleeding, enjoying his second win on the 3.0 season and also helping 3.0 rookie Mark earn his first ever 3.0 victory - YOU'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST WIN, MARK! Thus, tied up, this one would come down to #3 doubles, and on such an important court, Captain Frank left nothing to chance, putting in undefeated Scott and Brad to defend Towpath - and all of Akron, really - honor! AND DEFEND THEY DID! With amazing play (we assume), the pair remained undefeated, but more importantly kept their club in the running for Flight 3 supremacy!

Flight Standings

P. Westlake 6-0

LaTuchie 5-1

Force 4-2

P. Medina 4-2

Towpath 3-3

Wembley 3-3

NCRC 1-6

CVAC 1-6

Bay 1-5

Force @ Towpath - 3-2

Wembley @ Bay - 3-2

Paramount Westlake v. CVAC - 4-1

Paramount Medina v. NCRC - 3-2

Paramount Westlake continued their mid-season strong run of form with another team victory, this time travelling to the vaunted courts of CVAC to the tune of a 4-1 win that put them atop the Flight standings for the first time this season! CVAC tried to quiet the Flight Topping party, though, as CVAC rookie Matt enjoyed another solid outing, this time in a tough three set SUPER TIE-BREAK win versus one of the best singles players around, Matt (wait ... was he ... PLAYING HIMSELF?!). Captain Robert, though, got his Paramount side back on the winning side with his 82nd career 3.0 victory! (Which, if you've been reading this blog for a while, you know we've been celebrating Robert's record-breaking season the last few posts and you may think, "Wait, didn't he have 83 wins last week?" Yes, you'd be right, but the D.F.O. math department had to recheck our numbers and turns out we were a tad bit off, but as we clearly say over and over again, especially in this 3.0 STAT FAQ, we took remedial math way longer than we should have, so really, who's fault is this? Hmmm? HMMM??) No doubt inspired by their leader, the rest of the Paramount team went to work, sweeping the remaining doubles courts as James, Ben, Debabrata, Robert, Michael, and Kevin were seen to carry Captain Robert off the courts (again) to celebrate (again) his (possible) record setting day!

EDIT: After pouring through the data again and sending the info to the D.F.O. Math's Expert, he informed of us of an error to Robert's favor! Congrats Robert on your 84th career win, putting him third on the all-time 3.0 wins list! WE THINK!

EDIT Part 2: After pouring through our corrections, the D.F.O. Math's Expert re-corrected himself. Congrats Robert on your 83rd win! With all this congratulating and celebrating, at some point in the next 24 hours we'll be no doubt celebrating Robert's 1,200th win ... or the fact he doesn't even exist!

Dietrich, a D.F.O. Rookie of the Year?!

The travelling team won again, this time as Wembley headed to the only outdoor courts in. all of America (and of course, by "America," we mean Northeast Ohio). Bay rookie Dietrich continued his D.F.O. Rookie of the Year campaign with another solid outing and yet another three set SUPER TIE-BREAK victory, but Wembley newbie David (who apparently isn't from California like we first reported, but that just makes us question his origins more ... rather than our own reporting) enjoyed his fourth 3.0 singles victory on the year to even the team score! In doubles, Wembley Captain J.P. made the controversial decision of splitting up one of the best doubles tandems around, himself and David, but at least made sure they were on adjoining courts so their friendship would withstand the gameday separation and they'd be able to talk one another up during times of hardship, as David was no doubt able to do to help J.P. thwart a Donn "Two to Deuce" McLeroy comeback to seal the deal for Team Wembley! Special Bay shout out, though, to veteran 3.0er Michael, who, with is third 3.0 win on the year, set a personal season best! Great job, Michael!

Road trips seemed to be the order of the day as, for the third team face-off, road tripping Force won a nail biter at host Towpath. Force Captain John started the scoring for his club with his first 3.0 singles win in over two seasons while Force free agent Abhi won his second 3.0 singles match in a row! Towpath's John and Craig, though, two of the best doubles players around and all over the Towpath 3.0 record books, stopped the 3.0 bleeding with a tough three set SUPER TIE-BREAK to take their fourth tandem victory together on the year! Force veteran Scott, though, was able to blunt the damage as he helped lead rookie Denis to his third 3.0 victory on the season for the team, meaning the 3-2 team win was theirs as well!

Ben, being carried off the court after his team-clinching #3 doubles victory!

The lone hometeam to defend their courts - and their 3.0 honor! - was the legendary Paramount Medina club, and legendary 3.0er Roderick got the party started at #1 singles with another record breaking appearance! NCRC's Rex and Matthew, though, ruined the party as both earned their fourth 3.0 victories for North Canton's favorite club (though we aren't sure what South, West, and East Canton think). Down 0-2, the Medina doubles duos would have to rally to get their team back in the event and keep their Flight playoff hopes alive, and rally they did, sweeping the doubles courts and doing so in epic three set SUPER TIE-BREAKING fashion on #3 doubles as Ben and Tom were carried off the court to the applause of all of Medina! ALL OF IT!
