Previous PWC 3.0 Champions - Updated!

Updated: Oct 5, 2023

Year - 2020

Champion - Travis Haselswerdt 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (7) over Patrick Renz

Consolation Champion - Abhishek Sreesaila 6-4, 6-3 over John Schuld

Entries - 8

Notes - David and Travis moved into a tie for second most appearances with Thomas Green with both making their third straight showing. Meanwhile, the event witnessed five PWC rookies with John, Paul, and Pat making their first tournament appearances ... ever!

Championship Notes - After two straight finals appearances in '18 and '19, David's luck unfortunately ran short, but in making his two matches, he could take solace in the fact that he now has the third most matches ever played at the PWC. Meanwhile, Abhi won his first ever title, taking the Consolation Championship to go 2-1 during the event. Finally, Travis broke into the Championship bracket for the first time, not only earning his first first round win ever, but going on a 3-0 run, buttressed no doubt by playing two rookies along the way, to painfully hoist his first ever PWC title while at the same time lathering in victory IcyHot and copious amounts of Bayer Extra Strength pills.

Year - 2019

Champion - Peter Frankfort 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10) over Matt Birkbeck

Consolation Champion - Travis Haselswerdt 6-3, 6-3 over David Gann

Entries - 12

Notes - A tournament record in terms of number of entries, the 12 total 3.0 combatants bested the previous record of nine entries by a number so large one can barely calculate it. Also, Matt became the first ever former PWC Champion who attempted to defend his title. In the Consolation event, Travis did what no other 3.0 athlete had ever done - repeated the loser's bracket title. Sadly, as there is no trophy for said bracket, all he has is his quickly fading memories.

Championship Notes - Peter's first event was a complete success as he went 4-0, including two epic three setters, en route to earning his first ever 3.0 title. All told, Peter went 11-1 in tournament play in 2019, taking Runner Up at the 3.5 Akron Shootout and 1st in the Dick Shultz 6.5 Doubles while at the same time enjoying an amazing U.S.T.A. league run, going 24-2 and then 9-3 in the playoffs before being bumped to a well-earned 3.5 ranking.

Year - 2018

Champion - John Nelson 6-0, 6-1 over David Gann

Consolation Champion - Travis Haselswerdt 6-4, 7-6 (2) over Tim Conway

Entries - 4

Notes - The first time yours truly entered the PWC! Also, the first time the event had all new PWC entries, so that's something.

Championship Notes - John ripped through the 3.0 event in his first ever tournament, dropping but one game all tournament. At the same time, John did quite well in his maiden 3.5 event, earning Runner Up status in the Consolation singles event. Bumped to a 3.5, John enjoys a 2-0 record at the 3.0 level.

Year - 2017

Champion - Hasan Celik 6-3, 6-3 over Aaron Smith

Consolation Champion - D. Colicchio WO (PC) over Denny Huff

Entries - 6

Notes - For the second time in event history, one of the championship matches ... didn't take place.

Championship Notes - Doubling up in both the PWC 3.0 and 3.5 singles events, Hasan saw championship matches, taking Consolation Runner Up status in the 3.5 event.

Year - 2016

Champion - Matt Birkbeck 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (9) over Charles Graise

Consolation Champion - Roderick Yamat 6-2, 6-1 over Jon Burkhart

Entries - 6

Notes - Roderick extended his record number of appearances with his fourth entry, enjoying his first title, while Jon became a finalist for the second time in his PWC career.

Championship Notes - Matt, with a 26-18 3.0 record and a 29-25 overall record, is one of the most prolific of all the 3.0 stars. Indeed, few 3.0's have visited the championship courts as much as Matt, especially if those courts are at the Akron Open, where he seems to enjoy a considerable home court advantage. At the Akron Open, from 2010-2014, Matt earned Runner Up status in the 3.0 Doubles event from '10-'12 and Consolation Runner Up status in the 3.0 Singles event from '11-13. In 2014, Matt broke through, winning the Consolation Championship in the Doubles while visiting the Singles Championship match for the first time, earning Runner Up status after falling in three hard fought sets. Finally, at the 2016 PWC, Matt enjoyed his ultimate breakthrough as he took home his first title, once again in three hard fought sets.

Year - 2015

Due to lack of entries, or the fact no one actually played in the title matches in 2014, no 3.0 events were held. Truly, a sad day for all young children attempting to live their dream of playing super low level tennis.

Year - 2014

Champion - Jack DeMita Def (RFSL) Neil Hodges

Consolation Champion - Jon Burkhart Def (NS) Robert Novy

Entries - 7

Notes - For the first time in PWC history, neither championship matches actually ... took place. Congratulations to all!

Championship Notes - If there is a Mount Rushmore of 3.0 PWC Champions, then Jack, alongside Michael, must surely be upon it. While Jack's record is only 3-0 at the 3.0 level, Jack immediately, post-PWC, jumped to 3.5 and enjoyed amazing success, winning multiple doubles titles as well as another singles title the next season. Now playing at the 4.0 level, Jack's current tournament record is an outstanding 25-12.

Year - 2013

Champion - Sasa Savic 7-5, 6-4 over Robert Novy

Consolation Champion - Reynaldo Guillermo 6-0, 7-5 over James Tricomi

Entries - 4

Notes - After a four year absence, James revisited the championship courts, this time in the singles arena. Moreover, for the second straight season, the event took place at the Westlake facility rather than in Medina.

Championship Notes - After his PWC victory in only his second 3.0 event ever, Sasa immediately started competing at the 3.5 level, especially succeeding in the doubles events, as he continued to participate in several championship matches. 2-3 all-time in 3.0 tournament play, Sasa's current record stands at an impressive 21-22 overall.

Year - 2012

Champion - Michael Furino 6-4, Retired over Ron Novak

Consolation Champion - Kuo-Ping Fon 6-3, 6-4 over Anthony Martin

Entries - 5

Doubles Champions - Fon/Lin over Dewesse/Fox

Doubles Consolation Champions - None (event was a round robin)

Entries - 3

Participants - Sapp/Valvo 0-2

Notes - For the first time, the tournament was split between the Medina and the Westlake Paramount locations, with the singles event taking place in Westlake and the doubles in Medina.

Championship Notes - Kuo-Ping became the PWC's first ever double finalist, winning both the doubles and the consolation singles event while Michael enjoyed a fantastic 2012 season as he won the first event he ever entered, the PWC (3-0), before also taking the title at Washington Court Championships (2-0). From there he entered numerous 3.5 events, winning the Paramount Fall Classic 3.5 championship. 5-0 all time at the 3.0 level, Michael enjoys the highest reported ranking of any former champion as he now competes at the 4.5 level.

Year - 2011

Champion - Andrew Fatu 6-3, 6-2 over Eric Mull

Consolation Champion - G. Palaniappan 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (8) over Mike Willins

Entries - 9

Notes - The largest tournament in terms of entries until 2019, the 2011 saw Roderick set the appearance record with his third overall entry.

Championship Notes - Perhaps the youngest of all the PWC champions (perhaps, because I don't really know and any further research will probably get too uncomfortably close to what some states would consider "stalking"), the 2011 PWC was Andrew's first and only title at the 3.0 level as he quickly moved up to 3.5 competition the very same season.

Year - 2010

Champion - Atahan Koymen 6-1, 6-1 over David Ligan

Consolation Champion - Rob Steiner 6-1, 6-1 over Keith Moeller

Entries - 8

Notes - The largest tournament heretofore, Roderick made his second singles appearance.

Championship Notes - One of the most prolific 3.0's in the history of the PWC, Atahan enjoyed an amazing 2010 season, leading off with the PWC (3-0) before marching on to victories at Washington Court Championships (2-0) and the Paramount Fall Classic (4-0), enjoying an almost unprecedented undefeated 9-0 3.0 tournament run. Currently standing at 46-27 and 9-0 in 3.0 tournament play, Atahan has moved on to capture several 3.5 titles at both the championship and consolation level.

Year - 2009

Champion - Lloyd Yeh 6-4, 6-4 over Thomas Green

Consolation Champion - Timothy Benedict 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (7)

Entries - 7

Doubles Champions - Hirsh/Trudick 7-5, 7-6 over Baxter/Galieti

Doubles Consolation Champions - Tricomi/Tytko 7-5, 6-4 over Palmison/Scott

Entries - 4

Notes - The first time the event had a repeat finalist, Thomas would become the first 3.0 to repeat his finalist status in the singles event while Palmison would do the same in the Consolation Doubles.

Championship Notes - Lloyd, currently standing at 9-7 but 6-4 in 3.0 tournament play, would enjoy his first title at the PWC, but would later that year enjoy winning the Akron Open 3.5 Consolation Doubles Title.

Year - 2008

Champion - Chuck Bishop 6-1, 6-4 over Thomas Green

Consolation Champion - William Baxter 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (5) over Keith Moeller

Entries - 4

Notes - The 2008 PWC tied for lowest number of official entries, matching the 2018 rendition of the event with but four studly competitors. Also, in what would become commonplace, the event did not have enough entries to host a doubles championship.

Championship Notes - Chuck, who would later relocate to California, enjoyed an impressive run prior to this event, winning the 2007 Akron Open (3-0) and the 2007 Paramount Fall Classic (3-0) before taking the title in the 2008 PWC, making three straight title wins in a row! Chuck would then move on to the world of the 3.5 and take home a number of Consolation Final Titles and Runner Up's before moving to the Left Coast.

Year - 2007

Champion - Jim Houck 6-3, 7-6 (4) over Roland Simon

Consolation Champion - Mark Oliver 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (8) over D. Carlos

Entries - 5

Doubles Champions - Lambright/Lehner 6-2, 7-5 over Lahovich/Turley

Doubles Consolation Champions - Predle/Shetty 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4) over Palmison/Renicker

Entries - 5

Participants: Green/Houck 0-2

Notes - The first ever tournament! Also witnessed the first appearance of Roderick Yamat, the current record holder for most appearances.

Championship Notes - Jim, with a 2-0 PWC record, has a current overall record of 15-11 and 8-5 in 3.0 tournament play and would also see success in the 2007 Paramount Adult Spring Classic, going 3-1 as Runner Up.
