In the end, there could be only one ... and that one was Chris!
Playing a one-set winner-take-all match to advance in the 20th rendition of the Akron Open, these warriors of the 3.0 hardcourts took to said court to ply their 3.0 trade. So how did the event go down? And who won? And who won it all? Let's find out ... TOGETHER!
First, check out our (mostly wrong) previews and predictions here so you're fully informed on just how wrong we were.
AND ARE!
Round of 16 Results
The opening round saw few surprises with pre-tournament favorites Chris and John headlining the top of the bracket while 2024 MIO vice-champion Jason headlined the bottom of the bracket. The match of the bracket, however, took place between Quy and Sarkis, the former representing West Virginia tennis and the latter representing Michigan tennis - in Ohio! As predicted, this was a 3.0 barnburner, but it was the fella from WV that emerged victorious!
Quarterfinal Results
Round two witnessed two nail-biters, both taking place at the top of the bracket, with Green's very own Chris edging Paramount Westlake's very own John in a 6-5 slice-and-dice fest! The same score would end the match between Christopher and David, with the 55+ hometown Towpath boy (or man?) getting the win! At the bottom of the bracket, Jason continued his winning ways while for the first time ever, a member of the Ohio Valley section had made a semifinal of the Akron Open!
Semifinal Results
In the semi's, Christopher, no doubt exhausted after his previous match, fell to the tank-top wearing power that was Chris while Jason, looking to make back-to-back finals in back-to-back tournaments, was barely edged to the tune of 6-5 by a fella that was no doubt singing some "Rocky Mountain High" lyrics thanks to his third straight win!
Third Place & Final Results
Jason took on Christopher for 3rd place honors, and for the second event in a row, the Mayfield Village Racquet Club Man ended a tournament in style, this time with the 6-2 win to go 3-1 on the day!
In the final, the muscley power of Chris took on the John Denver-like smoothness of Quy, and back and forth these two contrasting styles went (we assume; our subscription to 3.0TV wasn't working so we didn't actually get to SEE the match, but give us some leeway here!). In the end, the hometown cooking of O-H-I-O proved to be the difference, and with an impressive 6-4 victory, Chris ended his first ever tournament run with his first ever tournament victory!
Congratulations to all the participants on a fantastically historic day of 3.0 tennis!
