2022 Akron Open Doubles Preview!

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

The final 3.0 event of the Akron Open series is here - the Akron Open Doubles Championships! Will Will and Ron, two legendary Towpath players repeat their title? Or will Timothy and Matthew, two rising 3.0 stars, repeat their title? Is it possible for two different tag-teams to repeat the same title?! FIND OUT HERE!

Teams

Andrew Chan (2.38) & Gregory Peacock (2.27)

Record - 0-0

Notes - They've never played together, but they have played against one another, with Andrew enjoying the 4 & 3 victory over his now doubles teammate!

Ron and William, two legendary 3.0 champions looking to repeat their Akron 3.0 greatness!

William Fox (2.98) & Ron Novak (2.85)

Record - 24-27

Notes - The 2022 Towpath Doubles Champions during the winter, this is one of the most storied pairings in the entire tournament! Not only that but they're the most experienced duo as well, as they've played in six events and 50+ matches together, including 17-2 at the 3.0 level, show! Add in the fact they're both members of Towpath, that Ron is a two-time D.F.O. Player of the Year and that William is coming off of a 55+ National Championship and the fact they're sorta the defending champs as well and, well, it's easy to see why the Vegas sports books are banking on these two to make an impressively deep tournament run!

Jeff Magistrelli (2.76) & Mark Robeson (2.49)

Record - 0-0

Notes - While neither have played together, they enjoy two distinct advantages! One, Towpath is their home court, so they'll enjoy inside (the lines) knowledge of the courts. Two, between the two of them, they've played with some of the 3.0 legends of the 3.0 game, from Ron Novak to Frank Licari to William Fox ... surely some of that doubles greatness has rubbed off on them!

Tim Schneider (3.0S) & Robert Schneider (3.0T)

Record - 4-3

Notes - The 2020 Green Open Doubles Championships Consolation winners and the Akron Open Doubles 3rd Place finishers, this father-son combo not only warms the hearts of their opponents with their feel-good story, but they usually walk away with a win, as well!

Ben and Erik, giving a thumbs up to their chances at Akron Open greatness!

Benjamin Young (2.95) & Erik Wasowski (2.87)

Record - 2-1

Notes - The 2021 Akron Open Doubles Vice-Champions, these two all-court players are hungry for their first 3.0 title together, even going so far to play unsanctioned - and possibly illegal?! - open level tournaments in order to prep for this big day! With Benjamin's winning experience (the 2020 Green Open Doubles Championship is his!) and Erik's ability to woo opponents with his cooler o' adult beverages, these two look to be the odds on favorites to ... participate!

Predictions

Jeff, batting 1.000 when it comes to predicting (Note: This does not imply accuracy, just that his attendance is perfect when we ask him to predict)!

Depending on how the brackets shake out, look for this to be a test of veteran leadership versus raw youthful power. That is, William and Ron have the know-how, the home-cooking, and a 2022 title to back up their chances. Benjamin and Erik, meanwhile, have a special blend of youth and experience to play with, making them a dangerous doubles duo when it comes to the most illustrious of all 3.0 events ... the Akron Open!
