2020 Green Open Championships Player Previews & Predictions - 3.0 Singles & Doubles!

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

It's here, the third major* event of the 3.0 tour*, the Green Open Championships (or GOC for short)! While relatively new, the GOC has quickly become one of the marquee events on the 3.0 tour* (which is technically a thing, as 3.0 players do in fact, take "a journey for business, pleasure, or education often involving a series of stops and ending at the starting point" ... thanks Webster's Dictionary)! Increasing EXPONENTIALLY (sorta) in size over it's two years in existence and boasting one of the largest and most talented fields of top-notch 3.0 players the 3.0 area has to offer, the GOC is quickly becoming a top tier 3.0 event, the likes of the PWC (Paramount Winter Championships) and the AO (Akron Open) already are! Only time will tell if the GOC (and the Wooster Aspen Championships, or WAC, for short) has what it takes to be considered a Major* (literally, because "time," i.e., "existing" for more than a year or so is pretty much the biggest requirement in being considered a 3.0 Major*), but in 2020, that time is now!

So who will win? Will Ben repeat his 2019 3.0 singles title? NO!

Bold prediction? NO! Ben, now a 3.5, is no longer eligible to compete on the rough and tumble 3.0 level, so a brand spanking new champion shall be crowned in 2020! (Though Ben is in the 3.5 event ... good luck, Ben!)

Will Aditya and Verma repeat their 2019 3.0 doubles title? MAYBE!

Bold prediction? MAYBE! Aditya and Verma are back!

So read on to find out who's playing and who has the best chance of being called the 2020 GOC 3.0 Champion!

3.0 Singles

(Players previewed by date they signed up, because, as they say, "availability is sometimes the best ability" ... or at least we say that)

Travis (in black), with the oldest boy band around.

Travis Haselswerdt ... Record: 60-32 overall, 48-24 in singles ... TennisRecord.Com rating: 3.00 ... 2019 Midwest Standing: #2 ... Singles Tournament Experience/Highlights: Three titles ('18 AO, '19 WAC, '20 PWC), two Vice-Championships (which is a fancy way to say "runner-up" ... '17 PFC '19 AO), two Consolation Titles ('18-19 PWC) ... Pros: Mobility and general overall consistency ... "pusher" mindset/ability/lack of ability ... solid backhand and net play ... such terrible ground strokes that he plays serve and volley more than most ... incredibly slow pace on most shots lulls opponents to sleep ... loud and obnoxious outfits temporarily (and sometimes permanently) blind opponents... awkward post-match requests for selfies with opponents often puts opponents on their emotional heels...

Benjamin's forehand, one of the best on tour*!

Benjamin Young ... 16-19 overall, 5-12 in singles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: 2.88 ... 2019 Midwest Standing: #10 ... Singles Tournament Experience/Highlights: Seven total 3.0 entries, with best finish being a 2019 WAC Consolation Finalist appearance ... Pros: Overall record is deceptive as his first 20 matches of career were at the much higher and almost professional 3.5 level ... in 2019, however, he played strictly 3.0, going an impressive 17-16 overall in all 3.0 level matches, mixed and otherwise, and 5-8 in singles ... very strong forehand that, when on, can end points away quick ... generally aggressive player who goes for winners, he feeds off the pace of his opponents... a renowned doubles player who has enjoyed playoff success, he is also a Captain of his league team, showing he has the court skills and leadership skills to problem-solve any on court problems ... maintains a sweet, sweet, red beard...

Tournament tested, Paul brings an all-court game to the GOC!

Paul Papas ... 9-14 overall, 9-14 in singles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: 3.0T ... 2019 Midwest Standing: #8 ... Singles Tournament Experience/Highlights: Eight total 3.0 entries, with multiple Consolation Finalist appearances, including '18 PFC and '19 AO ... Pros: Exclusively a tournament player, Paul enjoys vast experience on the 3.0 tour* ... overall record does not include vast doubles experience in both mixed and higher levels, showing he not only has an all court game but also has played up against tougher competition throughout much of this career ...

Chip, no stranger to the Championship courts!

Chip Bond ... 4-18 overall, 0-4 in singles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: 2.33 ... 2019 Midwest Standing: N/A ... Singles Tournament Experience/Highlights: '18 GOC Consolation Finalist ... Pros: As a member and Captain of the Green team's, Chip has intimate knowledge of the home courts of the Green Open Championships ... a veteran of the GOC, Chip has played in every 3.0 rendition of the event ... having enjoyed finalist experiences on his home Green courts, Chip is no stranger to the championship courts of the GOC ...

Will Timothy add more hardware to his tennis trophy case?!

Timothy Griffith ... 11-9 overall, 8-8 in singles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: 3.0T ... 2019 Midwest Standing: #5 ... Singles Tournament Experience/Highlights: '18 Akron Open Consolation Title, '18 Green Open Consolation Title ... Pros: Extensive tournament experience ... has won multiple Consolation Titles, showing he knows how to play when the championship pressure is on ... enjoyed first USTA league season and now has both league and tournament experience ... success in both singles and doubles illustrates all-court game that is well suited or the GOC championship courts!

3.0 Doubles

Robert (in white), with his boy band supporters!

Robert Schneider & Tim Schneider ... Robert 10-8 overall, 10-8 in doubles; Tim 3-2 overall, 3-2 in doubles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: Robert 3.0s, Tim N/A ... Midwest Standing: N/A ... Doubles Tournament Experience/Highlights: Robert, '12 Akron Open 3.0 Doubles Quarterfinalist; Robert and Tim, '20 Akron Open 3.0 Doubles 3rd place finish ... Pros: Robert's league championship experience as a core member of a National Championship qualifying team shows he's no stranger to success on the courts ... a two-time tournament participant, Robert's experience in tournament play shows he has valuable tournament experience ... communication, always key in doubles, will surely be to the Schneider Family's advantage as they clearly enjoy a familial bond plus previous tournament experience together that will give them a communication edge the rest of the tournament field will no doubt envy!

The defending GOC Doubles Champs are back!

Aditya Ayachitula & Shailendra Verma ... 3-0 overall, 3-0 in doubles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: Aditya 3.0S, Shailendra N/A ... Midwest Standing: N/A ... Doubles Tournament Experience/Highlights: '19 GOC Doubles Champions ... Pros: The defending GOC Doubles champs, Aditya and Shailendra clearly know their way around the Green Open championship courts ... enjoy communication advantages as they've not only teamed with one another before, but according to USTA records, have only teamed with one another before ... having never lost a doubles match, their intimidation levels are off the 3.0 charts!

Travis Haselswerdt & Benjamin Young... Travis, 60-32 overall, 12-8 in doubles; Benjamin, 16-19 overall, 11-7 in doubles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: Travis 3.00, Benjamin 2.88 ... 2019 Midwest Standing: Travis #2; Benjamin #10 ... Doubles Tournament Experience/Highlights: None together, but Travis won* the 2019 Paramount Fall Championships 3.0 Doubles (though Joshua Grischow, now a 3.5, did most the work) and finished as runner-up in the 2020 Akron Open Doubles Championships (though David Gann did most the work) ... Pros: Their complete lack of on-court chemistry may actually throw their opposition off their games ... Travis, a selfish singles player, brings mobility and defense to the courts while Benjamin, a captain and a leader of his league team, brings leadership, doubles experience, and actual talent to the courts...

Chip Bond & Timothy Griffith... Chip, 4-18 overall, 4-14 in doubles; Timothy, 11-9 overall, 3-2 in doubles ... TennisRecord.Com Rating: Chip 2.33, Timothy 3.0T ... 2019 Midwest Standing: Chip N/A, Timothy #5 ... Doubles Tournament Experience/Highlights: None together, but Timothy enjoyed a Runner-up finish at the '19 GOC ... Pros: As both are members of Green, both have intimate knowledge of the GOC championship courts ... while neither has played tournament doubles with one another, both have played league doubles, and enjoy an undefeated 1-0 career record!

Preview Formula Rationale (because we know you care):

The above previews count both U.S.T.A. tournament AND U.S.T.A. league play records and unless otherwise noted focus on the highest level of entry level play one can participate in - that's right, 3.0 play! - and dismisses other levels, unless otherwise noted ... because we are just THAT dedicated to providing super in-depth analysis ... and it's basically a lock-down, so we have time to do this because we are stuck inside. Thanks, Covid. Also, we include ratings from TennisRecord.Com which provides even more in-depth analysis for those of us that like going down the tennis stats rabbit hole. Moreover, we also include the completely irrelevant and almost impossible to understand U.S.T.A. Midwest Men's 3.0 NTRP Singles PPR Standings List, which includes years from 2012 to 2019. Please don't ask us what it means or how it's calculated or how there can be a standings list of the best 3.0 players in the entire Midwest that only calculates two total events from 2019 or the fact they only list 21 total rankings and we are guessing there MAY be more than 21 total 3.0 players in the entire Midwest, but hey, who are we to question things we don't understand.
