A new year and a new set of records as West Virginia conquered Ohio when it came to 3.0 tennis! In the first year of playoff play, leading the way was F. Gary, the first ever 3.0er to eclipse the 20 win mark (22)!. As a result he was not only named The 3.0er of the Year, but the Doubles Player of the Year as well. And thanks to partner Marty, the pair of them were named Doubles Team of the Year! Breaking up the West Virginia 3.0 monopoly was Two's very own Claude, who, thanks to his singles prowess, was named Singles Player of the Year!
Claude, a key member of the NWO Flight champion Twos Athletic Club, had one of the finest singles seasons around, going an impressive 9-1 in league play before wrapping up his '02 campaign with a undefeated 2-0 mark in the District Playoffs!
Marty and F. Gary not only made history as the third ever Doubles Team of the Year, but also as the first ever - and as of this writing, only - tandem to hail from outside the fine state of O-H-I-O! Undefeated in league play in seven matches, the duo were key players (doubles players, that is!) that helped lead their Charleston Tennis Club to National glory, earning seven more wins to end their '02 campaign with an impressive 14-3 as one of the top tag-team tandems in all the area!
F. Gary won The 3.0er of the Year thanks to being the first 3.0er to break the 20 win category and his teammate, Steve, joined him with the Special 3.0er of the Year award as the second 3.0er to achieve such feats!
Thoms set 3.0 history in so many ways it took the D.F.O. almost two decades to figure out how much history was made! For starters, Thoms captained CTC to Flight glory, the first ever West Virginia Flight champion in 3.0 history! From there, he led his club to District then State Championships, all the more impressive as his state - W. Va - conquered a whole different state - Ohio! And as if that wasn't impressive enough, Thoms when on to claim the first ever Midwest Championship as well! Thanks to his 9-1 league mark, followed by his 8-3 playoff mark, combined with his four team titles, and capped with a first ever Nationals finish that ended in lucky nubmer 13th place, Thoms not only set 3.0 history, but D.F.O. history as well! WHICH IS PROBABLY EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE!
